ADK to Buy Cascade Ski Center

The Adirondack Mountain Club will buy the cross country ski center on Rt 73.  It will still run the ski center, but the facility will see year-round use as a visitor center.  Most exciting is that it will be a staffed visitor center for people to stop and get questions answered.

Construction is underway at the Keene Stewarts shop to add fast EV chargers.  There will be 4 level 3 fast chargers.

School Student Population Variable

This fall, Lake Placid had it's lowest number of students in year.  Keene was up 10 with a large entering kindergarten.  Saranac Lake was up slightly.  Tupper Lake was down the most.  Pandemic students who appeared last year, have mostly returned to their home schools.

15,000 Hikers Use AMR Permits

The AMR permit system trial attracted 15,000 hikers during the 2021 season.  That is about half of the number who visited the AMR in 2020, the peak pandemic year.  Numbers of hikers were down in 2021.

EV Charging Stations at Two DEC Campgrounds

In Ray Brook, the Meadowbrook Campground, and the Frontiertown Campground in North Hudson now have EV charging stations.  There are about 200 now inside the Blue Line.

NEH Grants for Ti and Saranac Lake

The Fort in Ticonderoga will get a $200,000 grant for collection access.  Historic Saranac Lake will get $50,000 for continuing work on the Trudeau Lab.

Rt 73 Hiker Shuttle Finally Operating

Essex County has begun a pilot operation of a hiker shuttle running from Marcy Field south to Chapel Pond and the Giant/Dix trail heads.  It begins August 21 thru Oct 11 on weekends and holidays.

To hike on the AMR, first you need a reservation to park.  If you can't park, you can't hike.  No walk-in's allowed.  The reservation is free.
