Greater Diversity Appearing in Schools

North Country Community College and Paul Smiths try hard to attract diverse students. There has been a major effort to broaden the diversity in the programs that train future foresters, rangers and environmental scientists. Now, 20% of Students in NYS Environmental and Ranger Schools are nonwhite. The Newcomb School has a well known large international high school program. Keene and Indian Lake run smaller programs. They are being copied all over the Park.

Successful Immigration Stories in the Adirondacks

A recent faith community summit about immigration has also seen two articles appearing about people who have successfully moved to the region from other nations.

NYC Poverty @21.3%, White's are 33% of Population

The poverty rate in NYC is 21.3% and if you add "near poverty" it jumps to 45.8%.  Of the City population, 33.3% is white.  The article suggests these numbers are the NYS future.

Paul Smith's in a Free-Tuition Program for Inner City Schools

The program covers tuition costs for designated urban high schools.
Say Yes to Education is the name of the program.

Newcomb School Welcomes Lots of Foreign Students

The Newcomb Central School has had as many as 40% of students in grades 9-12 from other nations.  There have been 61 students from 25 nations over the last 6 years. They are housed with local families.

Keene Welcomes 6 International High School Students 2013

This is the second year of the program.  KCS doesn't plan to grow the program.  It is set at six, each from a different country.  They are staying with local families of KCS students.

State spends a million on Camp Colby

This old estate is now a camp run by DEC for inner city youth and an important place to get city kids to connect with the outdoors.  It was the estate of J Walter Thompson of the advertising agency in New York City.  He willed the property to the State for this use.
